After gawking at the glass blowing, we took another water taxi to the main island of Venice. We had heard from multiple people less than satisfactory comments about Venice such as "Venice is underwhelming" "It smells" "It's boring" Blah blah blah. It was breathtaking. It was honestly exactly how you would picture it. Every canal was cuter than the one before. I probably have 20 pictures of different canals. It didn't smell bad at all, it smelt like the sea which was a little refreshing and caused us to hunt for some delicious seafood. But some of the things people did mention to us were indeed true. It was expensive and overrun with pigeons. No matter what you were to order at a restaurant, you had to be prepared to pay at least 15 euro per person. We opted out of a few museums because the student entrance fees were 20 euro. So instead we decide to explore the free streets of Venice, getting lost along side canals and making our way to the other side of the Grand Canal. Here we fell asleep basking in the Venetian sun. The history I can read in a book or online, but those moments I will always remember.
In regards to the pigeons, I may or may not have screamed a couple times in St. Mark's Square when I was convinced I was in a scene of Hitchcock's movie
The Birds. The pigeons had no fear. In fact the wanted to be near people. I witnessed one woman holding a group of pigeons and another feeding them with her mouth. Mmm. I on the other hand ran around in circles trying to get them to fly away. It was a wasted effort.
After getting lost a few more times we made it to our hostel/apartment near the Santa Croce bridge. We watched the sunset along the Grand Canal. The night was filled with wine and laughs but ended early because Venice shuts down at about 10. The restaurant we ate at turned off the kitchen lights while we were still eating. Then we were off the next morning to our Roman home.We only stayed a day, but I couldn't have asked for a better one.
